I had no knowledge of mural painting whatsoever, I was a student. I kept reading about David Alfaro Siquieros being in prison and they were passing out a petition to release him when I was teaching at the Contra Costa College. When I came back to San Diego I read that Pablo Neruda and Salvador Dalí were going to be at Siqueiros’ inauguration of the Polifórum in Mexico. So I decided to go down to Mexico City. I’d never been there before, so it was really bold to go down there by myself.
