SCOPE NOTE

This collection contains information about the two hunger strikes at UCSB that led, among other results, to the ethnic and gender studies undergraduate requirements and the eventual Ph.D. program in Chicana/o Studies.  Included is a notarized copy of the agreement signed May 6, 1994 by the university administration and the hunger strikers. The collection is primarily made up of collected news clippings from 1994 and 1995 reviewing the hunger strikes of 1989 and 1994; although there is little coverage on the 1989 strike collected as of this writing it is important to note that a copy of the statement of commitment to “el Centro Concept” dated April 25, 1989 from Barbara S. Uehling, the Chancellor at that time has been included.  The collection also illuminates the internal development of the Chicano Studies Department. In the second section entitled El Congreso Hunger Strike, the collection highlights the 1994 struggle by El Congreso to voice their support for the ethnic studies requirement and their opposition to the University of California's interference in the process.

This collection was created from disparate sources. It draws together a quantity of published articles, news clippings and ephemera that had been compiled over the years.  It does not purport to be a representative collection and presently spans a single box and covers the period from 1989 through 1995.  It is expected to grow over time with the addition of donated materials.
