Goals
- The overall event is to celebrate
the opening of the archives of the Comisión Femenil
Mexicana Nacional on the occasion of the 30th anniversary
of their Constitutional Convention in Goleta, June 1973.
- To publicize the Comisión
archives to the academic community and to the general public.
- To convey to the college and
college-bound generation the strategies used by the Comisión
to empower themselves in their efforts to improve their lives
and eliminate barriers to equality for women. In the words
of Comisión leader Rosemary Quesada Weiner, "to
give Chicanas . . . the pride, confidence and impetus to actualize
[their] own potential" (Las Mujeres 1977 National
Women's Conference, 1978).
- Symposium to explore a better
understanding of the role and involvement of Latinas in advancing
women's social and economic progress through the historical
development, accomplishments, and socio-political impact of
the Comisión Femenil Mexicana Nacional. It will also
add to the discourse on the history of Latinas in the feminist
movement, and address current concerns of Chicanas-Latinas/Chicana
feminism/examining the everyday practices of political intervention
that Chicana Feminism has fostered.
- To inform, inspire and motivate
Chicana(o)/Latina(o) students and the community at large.
- To encourage the further donation
of individually-held national CFMN materials, including presently
dispersed historical photographs about the Comisión.
