Comments:  From the Gaia Pacifica: The Art of Activism Exhibition organized by Mary Hsi at Centro Cultural de la Raza (April 14-May 6, 1989).  A fish bowl filled with oil tainted water is on display; sand has been sprinkled at the base of the bowl.  The accompanying text explains the idea: "This water was scooped out of the Prince William Sound, Valdez, Alaska, days after the 'Exxon VALDEZ' tanker went aground on the Bligh Reef...."  Cross-reference with Center Activities and Programs.

Comments:  From the Ceremony of Memory Exhibition organized by Patricio Chavez at Centro Cultural de la Raza (November 17, 1989-January 2, 1990).  Large box with a three dimensional statue of the Virgin inside.  White dresses are hung from the sides of the box and their skirts cover an altar at the Virgin's feet where four gold dolls have been placed.  The top and bottom of the box are enclosed with gold, cut out spider's webs and flowers.  See slide 199 (35) [Cat. 3 034] for an installation view.  Cross-reference with Indigenous Chicano Medium and Art Forms.

Comments:  Slides 1-3: from the David Avalos Exhibition at Galería Posada, Sacramento, CA (1985).  Slide 4: from the Border Realitites--Part Two Exhibition of David Avalos' work at Centro Cultural de la Raza (February 1986).  This altar's central focus is a woman holding a sign announcing a "National Protest March Against the Militarization of the Border."  A heart with spikes extending from it, combined with barbed wire, decorates the top.  Loteria cards are arranged in the bottom third with a hand holding a campesino wrapped in barbed wire and another hand with a PEMEX oil drum.  A skull and crossbones is upside down on a disk at bottom center.  Cross-reference with Center Activities and Programs.  279(11-13:) White wall David Avalos, Galería Posada, 1985, Sacramento, CA.  126(14:) Border Realities--Part Two.

Comments:  From the All Time is Simultaneous Exhibition at MARS (1989).  The title of the piece is on the wall at the top: All Time is Simultaneous.  Two covers from "Time" magazine are hung on the wall; one reads: "Hispanic Americans, Soon: The Biggest Minority"; the other:  "¡Magnifico! Hispanic Culture Breaks Out of the Barrio."  An hourglass turned on its side was placed between them.  Two articles are below the covers: "It's Your Turn in the Sun" and "A Surging New Spirit".

Comments:  From the California Works Premium List Exhibition.  This massive mask was made for Diá de los Muertos.  A devil is sitting on his throne, which becomes like a hat for the face below it.  A taqueria, "Raul's Auto Repair," a nightclub named "Mambo Rock" and other details create an assemblage that is rich in detail.  Cross-reference with Indigenous Chicano Mediums and Art Forms.

Comments:  From the David Avalos Exhibition in Sacramento (1985).  A stage has been created in this caja.  Theatre curtains are tied back in the background and two sets of stairs lead up to the stage.  A pink heart with red chiles extending from its cleavage is wrapped in barbed wire and fills the entire stage.  Cross-reference with Center Activities and Programs.

Comments:  From the Nine Chicano Artists Exhibition (January 8-February 2, 1989).  This piece is a modified hubcap.  A three dimensional tin heart was riveted together and a square window with bars was inset in its center.  Jesus' face is visible behind the bars.  A funnel was attached to the heart at its cleavage and multi-colored strips of twisted metal have been placed in its opening.  The heart was affixed to a saw blade, and this, in turn, was fastened to the hubcap.

Comments:  From the Nine Chicano Artists Exhibition (January 8-February 2, 1985). A hubcap is the background for a three dimensional tin heart which appears to be pried open down the center causing a fissure.  A Virgen de Guadalupe was placed on a rod in this opening.  Multi-colored strips of twisted metal surround the scalloped hole and radiate out.  A red dried chili is stuck into the funnel at the heart's cleavage.

Comments:  From the David Avalos Solo Exhibition at Galería Posada.  A metal heart is mounted on a saw blade which is then attached to a hubcap.  Chiles extend from a funnel on top and a heart shaped bottle was placed at the bottom to catch blood running from a gash in the heart. See 271(15) [Cat. 1 013] for a variation on this design.

Comments:  From the David Avalos: Recent Works Exhibition, Grand Rapids, MI (1986).  A wooden cross has been covered with strips of tin.  A three dimensional heart is at its center.  A small platform, built from a square of tin riveted together, is at the base of the heart and holds a shot glass with a pair of dice inside.  The bottom beam of the cross has been fitted with a penis shaped from strips of metal.

Comments:  From the David Avalos: Recent Works Exhibition at the Grand Rapids Museum of Art (1986).  A very simple tin heart was riveted together to create this piece.  A red gash runs diagonally across half the heart and a metal spiral strip appears to be blood dripping from the hole.  Flames shoot from the cylinder at the top of the heart.  It's mounted on a circular saw blade and then on a hubcap.

Comments:  From the Visible Truths: Traditional Sources Within the Chicano Aesthetic Exhibition in Sacramento, CA (September 21-November 10, 1990).  A stage was created by hanging canvas like theatre curtains, pulled back on both sides.  A hubcap occupies the entire background of the stage.  A heart made from metal riveted together is swaddled in barbed wire.  It has a tear in its bottom section painted red to resemble blood.  A cross has been placed in the heart's cleavage.

Comments:  From the Cafe Mestizo Exhibition at INTAR Gallery (June 1989).  A high-heeled shoe has been covered with strips of metal riveted in place.  A circular saw blade has sawed through a heart inside the shoe and an open lipstick was placed near the toe.  The heel of the shoe was hooked over a champagne glass and both were placed on two circular saw blades inside a hubcap.

Comments:  From the Cafe Mestizo Exhibition at INTAR Gallery (June 1989).  This assemblage's central focus is a white heart with a hole in its center, lined with sheet metal shaped into scallops and saw blades cut in half.  The heart is placed on a hubcap and covered with black netting.  A cactus pad and gun lie on the right.  On the left an axe lies across the spine of the book The Last of the Mohicans and two cacti and a doll's head complete the design.

Comments:  (14-15): From the Border Realities--Part Two Exhibition at Centro Cultural de la Raza, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA (February 1986); (16-19): From the David Avalos Solo Exhibition at Galería Posada, Sacramento, CA (1985).  This piece uses a Xerox of an injury to a young boy who was shot by the border patrol because he was throwing rocks.  A definition of a boulder was included as well as the District Attorney's refusal to prosecute the border patrol responsible for the shooting.  Parallels are drawn with Apartheid South Africa's practice of shooting children who throw stones.

Comments:  From an exhibition of David Avalos'work at Centro Cultural de la Raza.  This piece addresses Mexican stereotypes and the dilemma of the border.  "Might makes right" and "Everyone exists outside the law" are two phrases used which are emblematic of the problem.  Color Xeroxes are arranged on the wall with handwritten text explaining that "California was once Mexico."  Cross-reference with Center Activites and Programs.

Comments:  274(13): Studio shot for Art in America Magazine, 1992; (14): from the All Time is Simultaneous Exhibition, MARS Art Space, Phoenix, AZ (1989).  A hand was constructed from strips of metal riveted together.  The palm has a fissure in its center and blood is streaming out into a funnel that was placed in the neck of a Thunderbird wine bottle.  The letters B-I-N-G-O are balanced on the tip of each finger.

Comments:  From the California Murals Off the Wall Exhibition at Centro Cultural de la Raza (March 1983 and 1984).  This piece integrates a painting made from a photo taken during a Committee on Chicano Rights march at the U.S./Mexican border.  A man is holding a map of Mexico which has the words: "Asi era Mexico antes del Robo" [This was Mexico before the robbery"].  This image was mixed with the artist's version of Loteria, a game similar to Bingo.  272(1, 3-21) and 249 are from an exhibition at the Gallery of the Multicultural Arts Institute (1984).  167(3) and 109(58-63) are from the California Murals Off the Wall Exhibition (March 1983).  Cross-reference with Center Activities and Programs.  272(2) outside Centro.  272(1), (3-21) and 249 Gallery of the Multicultural Arts Institute, San Diego.  109(58-63) inside Centro.

Comments:  From the Cafe Mestizo Exhibition at INTAR.  A torso with legs to the knees, no arms, and a red abstract head is dressed in a lime green suit.  The coat has circles of seeds with red chilies in their centers glued on in a pattern.  Remaining seeds are strewn on the floor around the torso.  The pants are unzipped and "Y QUE" written on the chest.

Comments:  From the All Time is Simultaneous Exhibition at MARS (1989).  A rectangular plank of wood with a world globe inserted in its center is suspended from the ceiling.  The piece is tilted and hangs diagonally.  The text underneath the plank contains a quote from Henry David Thoreau: "If I have unjustly wrested a plank from a drowning man, I must restore it to him though I drown myself."  Refers to the U.S. occupation of Mexican territory.  See 262(13) [Cat. 3 109()] for an installation view.

Comments:  From the All Time is Simultaneous Exhibition at MARS (1989).  This assemblage reinterprets the launching pad for the space shuttle.  Three half circles, one within the other, form the base for the launching system.  Twenty sharpened cylinders of wood were assembled into a square. The space shuttle is mounted above it on a wall as if lift-off has been achieved and the rockets are carrying it into space.

Comments:  From the Ceremony of Memory Exhibition organized by Patricio Chavez at Centro Cultural de la Raza (November 17, 1989-January 21, 1990).  A simply designed wooden house with a chimney becomes a face: two square windows become eyes and the doorway is a screaming mouth.  Smoke bellows from the chimney and flames lick the picket fence on the side and crawl up the table that the house sits on.  It successfully depicts catastrophe.
